The European Union is putting wood energy at the forefront of future energy supply, to increase its energy independence. The goal for 2010 is to provide 12% of its gross domestic energy consumption from renewable energy sources.
The power referred to wood energy heating is 10 000 megawatt hour, an increase of 4,5 megatonnes oil equivalent production. Approximately one million homes heated by wood by means of individual boilers, collective heating and district heating.
