The European Union places wood energy in one of the first plans for future energy supply, for the increase of its energy independence. The target for 2010 is to supply 12% of its gross domestic energy consumption from renewable energy sources.
The power referred to wood energy heating is 10 000 megawatt hour, an increase of 4,5 megatonnes oil equivalent production. Approximately one million homes heated by wood by means of individual boilers, collective heating and district heating.
