Ecological crisis: the financial system pointed at
55% of the French believe that the next president will have to take the ecological crisis into account as much as the economic crisis. This is one of the lessons from the Harris Interactive survey, unveiled today by the Nicolas Hulot foundation (FNH) and which we are publishing in preview.
Noting that "the environment has been pushed into the background by the economic crisis", the Hulot foundation wanted to know if, despite the crisis and the problems of purchasing power, the French were still just as worried about the disorders which affect the planet ( food crisis, global warming, decrease in fossil fuels ...)
As a result, more than eight in ten French people still say they are concerned about the ecological crisis. New element: 60% of those surveyed agree that regulating the financial and economic model would help to fight against these ecological disasters.
Eight out of ten people believe that the current financial system "is not viable in the long term because it leads to the depletion of natural resources" and that it "must be regulated on a global scale". This parallel between economy and ecology, Nicolas Hulot has been doing for months, pointing in particular to the “finance industry” which “speculates on the common goods of humanity, such as agricultural raw materials or oil”.
Hulot also criticizes the multinationals which "escape tax and national solidarity via tax optimization systems". To regulate the financial system, the Hulot foundation pleads for a drastic fight against tax havens. According to the FNH survey, nine out of ten people think that it would be a good thing to compel companies to declare in which country they pay their taxes.
86% would be in favor of European states benefiting from zero-rate loans from the European central bank in order to finance sustainable investments. 74% would not be opposed to the creation of a tax on financial transactions which would be used in part to finance solidarity and environmental protection in developing countries.
"This poll shows that the French are a step ahead of the main candidates in believing that the environment should not be treated apart or simply as a constraint, said FNH spokesman Benoît Faraco. Ecology is the only possible way out of the crossroads of crises in which we are mired. Three out of four French people also believe that "better respecting the environment" would create jobs.
