File bigger than 2 GB on FAT32 hard disk?

by Christophe » 11/05/10, 22:29

Everything is in the title, is there a trick to put files larger than 2GB on a hard drive in FAT32?

This is for an (old) external hard drive whose transfer is only possible if the hard drive is in FAT32 ... : Evil:

Good evening

I am surprised, it would seem that the limit of FAT32 is 4 GB, maybe a writing error on your part ... or then you are dealing with really a very old computer.

Indeed according to wiki it is 4 GB http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAT32

But with me it refuses all files larger than 2GB ...
I will continue to test ...

FYI, I formatted with SwissKnife V3 http://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche ... knife.html since XP does not know how to format in Fat32.

I found 2 tracks:

- If it is an avi file, cut it with VirtualDub

- To be able to copy a file larger than 2 or 4 GB on an external media DD, you must create an NTFS partition and voila! (The main partition being in Fat32)

a) yes it is possible but it is heavy and what about other types of files ...

b) I must stay in FAT32 otherwise we can no longer connect to the hard drive other than with a Windows PC (I tried NTFS nothing to do even linux does not recognize it while in fat it works)

Good am I good to buy a new hard one? :?

re Goodnight

with UBUNTU version 9 or even 10 that I installed last night, no problem recognizing partitions of all kinds.

there is xtremsplit to cut files into several pieces, but that must be re-glued before use of course.

cutkiller was perfect and even lighter but the creator's site has disappeared.

although the software cannot be found on the net, I have a copy at my disposal, those who wish will request it in a private message on econology (edition of the message on Saturday May 15, 2010)

i have old computers in windows 98 with 40go hard drive and even 160go

w98 only know the fat 32 no ntsf

a seller of computer hardware gave me a maxtor onetrack dynamic drive overlay which allows you to fool the bios and mount large discs on old stuff! it only works with maxtor hard drives

it is necessary to make turn the floppy disk before loading windows: it is this floppy disk which formats the disc and then window uses without problem the 160go in fat32

I never found any trace of this diskette on the internet

more exactly this floppy disk is not enough to format: it is she who orders, she asks to also put the windows cdrom to do I do not know which kitchen

but it works since the old thing I'm typing on is mounted like that ...

re Goodnight

it is about "Dynamic Drive Overlay" which allows the recognition of large hard disk on old systems.
it allows to change the MBR so that it is recognized.

but i don't know where to download this file.

in UBUNTU 10.04, with partition manager kde, if not, you can resize your FAT32 partition by reducing it and create in the free space a new partition in NTFS, recognized without problem by LINUX.

a bastard solution but which also works is to use WINRAR and to create a compressed file cut into several pieces.
once open the program, choose as the compression method "store" and as the volume size "2000 mb" which will create 2 GB files numbered in the style "xxxx.part1.rar "

I never saw it download: when it was given to me I didn't have internet ...

since I searched, I never found anything, the only solution is therefore to copy it, even if it is written everywhere reproduction prohibited ...
