At least officially! Patents for a nuclear tunneling machine appear to have been filed.
I'm not sure where to look for these patents, if anyone has a lead?
The idea is to melt the ground, which makes it possible to move forward, but also to create a "glass" to stiffen the walls of the tunnel, which avoids having to evacuate waste.
There are many references on the internet, such as:

Information or science fiction? Everyone can choose.
It remains to find the patents!

This is very exotic.
But I still think that a small surface vacuum tube system is the most suitable for our known economic and technical means, and would be profitable very quickly compared to cars, trains and planes.
