You will find 2 3 interesting links on ethanol and on the Fischer-Tropsch process which allows to make gasoline from wood (I don't know if it goes through methanol?).

Good luck:

This is the answer I expected from you, but in the event of a total oil shortage, methanol would return to what it was at the start.
Furthermore
industrial ethanol is produced by synthesis (hydration) from ethylene: CH2 = CH2 + H2O V CH3 — CH2OH.

This too leaves a doubt as to its origin in the event of too high demand.Image

Of course !
You take a still and distill dry wood ... Simple, right? : Wink:

Or you have that: reaction at 400 ° C and 200 atm of CO2 and H2 in the presence of a catalyst based on zinc chromite (ZnO + Cr2O3).
CO2 + 3 H2 -> CH3OH + H2O
