Original solar engine easy to build

by caracole » 31/01/08, 14:54

Hello,

Discovered on the site http://www.instructables.com/id/Solar-Thermal-Motor/ the construction of a childlike simplicity of a solar engine which we can see the video here: http://www.instructables.com/files/orig ... J4RETS.avi

By Jove! It makes you want to try but I guess for an installation that produces something useful the size must be gigantic ...

At the level of operation, it seems to me to be a solar horizontal wind turbine?

What do you think?

I am of this opinion, but try does not cost anything and in addition it is instructive!

This site instructables.com is really exciting.

Hello,

Only work if the sun is low on the horizon !!
From 45 ° I have big doubts !!

According to my reasoning it should turn the other way ... shit how does it work then? It's still not a "solar sail" ???

Obelix you probably have an idea ???

I read across ... it's the black plastic bands that are expanding and contracting that makes you spin?

As I understand it, it turns by gravity. A band is either released or tense depending on its exposure or not to the sun. The released band causes an eccentric mass, which induces rotation.
Regarding the inclination of the sun, it is always possible to place a mirror below to reflect the sunlight on the bands passing down. This should improve the operation anyway.
I'm good or not?

Hello,

Yes, it is by deformation due to the "pulling" of the bands exposed to the sun.
The center of gravity moves thus causing the rotation of the system.
From where :
=> flexible central core
=> speed proportional to the quality of the dynamic balancing !!
=> Stretch the bands well before fixing them

It's nice.
it makes me think of a Minto wheel.
To improve the device, I would suggest: a material that has a very fast deformation, a mirror with solar concentration, a water tank to cool.
