Sunscreen is a poison for the oceans

06.08.2015 20minutes.fr

We are told enough: putting sunscreen is an essential gesture on the beach and that we go back and forth between sand and sea. But a study by the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies, in Spain, explains that this gesture is also dangerous for the environment, and more particularly for the oceans.
Components harmful to marine flora and fauna

The chemical components contained in solar products are thus responsible for the decrease in the quantity of phytoplankton, a crucial element in the food chain in our oceans. They would also contribute to the degradation and bleaching of corals by triggering a virus with dramatic effects on biodiversity and the functioning of reef ecosystems.

4.000 tonnes of sunscreen are deposited each year on the coral reefs

Some maritime reserves simply prohibit sunscreen. And we understand them, when we know that every second, 0,8 liters of sunscreen dilutes in ocean waters. Each year, 25.000 tonnes of cream are distributed by tourists to the water, of which 4.000 tonnes are absorbed by the coral reefs.. And the phenomenon is not likely to be reversed anytime soon since sales of sunscreen products are increasing on average by seven percent per year.
Will we soon have to choose between protecting and preserving the environment? Alternatives exist, with organic sunscreen products, safe for the oceans, or, for the more adventurous, drinking sunscreen.

Not very recent like "scoop" lessdewatt, we were already talking about it in 2009 but a summer reminder does not hurt ...
