More than £ 15 million go up in smoke every year: quantities of banknotes are destroyed because they are so impregnated with cocaine, heroin or ecstasy that they cannot be put back into circulation. These cuts come from seizures made by the police or customs at the homes of dealers or individuals engaged in money laundering; they have been in contact with traffickers or drug users. In most cases, their destruction is only a simple precaution, but in several recent cases their level of contamination was such that they were considered dangerous to health.

The German euro, it is sniffed
A recent analysis of euro banknotes reveals frightening clues to the number of cocaine users in Germany, as well as the flow of money. There is hardly a single German euro banknote that does not bear traces of this drug, as scientists from Fritz Soergel's team at the Nuremberg Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research found out.
