The meaning of wokism is difficult for us French to understand, which is why we recommend reading the book by Anne Toulouse, published in 2022 by Éditions du Rocher. The author goes back to the origins of this ideology, she analyzes the good initial intentions then its delusional excesses. Finally, she makes a very detailed analysis of American society and establishes a comparison with ours.

“The word woke comes from African-American slang, it literally means ‘awake’ and refers to people politicized around issues of racial and societal inequalities. It appeared in the 1960s but the term became popular in 2022 with the activation of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and it is now used to designate discrimination in all its forms.

(...)

Anne Toulouse gives examples of excess generated by woke ideology.
Among the most appalling:
- white privilege which asserts that white people inherit undeserved advantages
- another privilege: the chance to have no doubts about one’s sexual identity
- zero tolerance for the danger posed by divergent opinions
- ban any remarks that can make others feel different
- cancel culture which consists of making an individual invisible and silencing
(or boycott a company) that has transgressed the woke doctrine
- the denunciation of behavior deemed non-compliant, a true modern version
from the pillory
- Vocabulary review
