A practical question ... about tomatoes

While taking a tour in the greenhouse the plans of bought tomatoes are already very high (more than one m) and in flowers but for the moment no fruit.

So far nothing abnormal but now the greenhouse is almost closed on one side: the one that had collapsed and is generously braced.

So it seems to me (without certainty) that potential pollenizers are not jostling.

The tomato is "self fertile" it seems to me.

Should we give it a boost as for zucchini (which abort galore right now)

Is it necessary to reopen the second side of the greenhouse to improve natural pollenization?

The tomato is self-fertile, but pollinators help in a curious way: the "bumblebees", these big gluttons, do "vibrate" the flowers, which promotes pollination !!! The bees, not "wobbly" enough, are useless!

In production greenhouses, you can install "vibrators"! Others, despite self-fertilization, put bumblebees ...

In the absence of "vibrators", you can, when you pass by, shake the strings ... So yes, literally a "push," as if you were playing marbles. On the string!

But there may be something else. The tomato is a plant a little curious, in which we can promote the vegetative phases or the production ... in particular by the temperatures and moreover, the variations of temperatures day / night ... But I do not remember how - not doing nothing!

The lazy garden is bigger than I thought ...

Yesterday evening, I took the urge to check the size of my vegetable garden, since the last fenced space was planted ... I did it "in steps", or around 10%. I am sometimes asked the question and I said "5 or 600 m²" ...

Surprise, it's taller than I thought: it's about 50m long and 20m wide (it's a trapezoid, wider "at the top", narrower "at the bottom"). So everything included, paths, etc., shrubs, frames ... that's about 1 m², or 000 ares.

Damned, I'm less lazy than I thought !!!!!!!!!!!

I would launch, if I go, a "call for participation", with things "framed": the format (how many pages per site, photos ...), the various points addressed (situation, previous experience, motivation, prioritized objectives ...), etc ...

For me, this would concern the 2019 season. Which will, in all likelihood, be the year when I will extend my "radius of action" to France ... If all goes well, of course [I'm talking about my health] .

Bonjour,

Since you are in the tomato, I go further in lazy experimentation this year I do not tutore, I do not pinch, as I have room on my boards and a good thickness of straw (always the same phenomenon). is for next year) I will let them live their lives and run.
As I will not be there in August I put some cheap early cavalry tomato for this test.
That way I'll know what to expect, however this year I do not put an umbrella for mildew because as said above I will be absent a month.

I will keep you informed of all this.

Have a nap at all!

GoogleMaps: Right click "measure a distance" and click at different points to define the perimeter and obtain the surface.
