Store energy in the form of compressed air

by Enzo » 28/05/08, 18:05

Hello everyone, I am currently in the second year of preparatory class and I am carrying out as part of my schooling a research work called TIPE.

My TIPE deals with the study of energy storage in the form of compressed air. I come on this forum looking for information, documentation or contacts that can help me in my work.

My research led me to contact a company called EDM located in Sophia Antipolis (06) which, to my knowledge, is the only one working on this project in France currently.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Coordinately, Enzo.

Hello everyone

Compressed air storage also exists in power plants (some ... not all) where the air is compressed with nocturnal surpluses and when daylight returns, all this is re-expanded in a possibly gas turbine (supply of gas). fuel if peak to be supplied)

An example

I'll get you a reference best that I have in mind in a book by Philippe Arquès.

I quit doing the job you haven't done during the year : Lol:

I have lots of students like you who do it only when the flame crosses the minimum distance causing intolerable heat on their buttocks ...

Hello !

compress air by an electric ... nuclear compressor!

what interest ?

Hi Jonule,

You know that a very large installation does not really like load variations.

Excluding consumption is very variable, in particular the day / night cycle.

So this storage allows operation at a more or less constant load while adapting to variable consumption, or even peak consumption by occasionally injecting natural gas into the gas turbine (expansion).

The fact that the big installation is nuclear is another problem and I know roughly where you are going with this :P

and then, how many are there in France?

1 in 60?

why has it not been generalized?

if not, is air compression profitable in terms of efficiency?

I don't know if there are any in France, because EDF relies on the hydraulic WWTPs and also the Swiss hydraulic network.

In Germany, I know this one. As they have coal plants and little hydraulics, they made some pneumatic storage plants. The geology must also be suitable (large sealed cavity)

On the efficiency, it is okay if we do not allow the compressed gas to cool too long. 12h is fine (we find more or less the energy of compression with 10 or 20% of losses near (the air is like elastic "and a good thermal insulator), 1 month, it is already less.
