Safe use of excreta in agriculture

by izentrop » 12/01/21, 00:25

WHO provides various guides for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and wastewater
What I have found interesting is this document which may be of interest to those who have a compost toilet and a garden:
VOLUME IV USE OF EXCRETA AND HOUSEHOLD WATER IN AGRICULTURE

We learn about the different pathogens and their treatment, storage times before use depending on the type of treatment, all kinds of data, such as the use of lime or ash instead of the usual sawdust, to improve the treatment of pathogens.
The separation at the source of the urine, then storage in an airtight container for 6 months, eliminates any risk. loss of 70% of nitrogen if composting.
The best use is a few days before planting, quickly buried in the ground to avoid losses in the form of ammonia ...

What about antibiotics, hormones and other indestructible molecules that will end up in our gardens ....?

A very lumpy compost, properly moistened and allowing oxygen to enter are its heart, or the incorporation in a well decompacted soil, are the ideal media for breaking down the organic matter that are antibiotics, hormones, drugs.
With regard to excreta, certain substances with endocrine disrupting properties (of human origin, such as 7-ethinylestradiol, or of plant origin, such as 17-α-estradiol, estriol) and pharmaceutical products may be
present at low concentrations, especially in derived urine. It should be noted that
animal manure also contains residues of used pharmaceuticals,
in many cases, as a preventive measure, which results in large quantities
antibiotics, in particular. The floor constitutes a system generally better equipped than
waterways for the degradation of pharmaceutical residues present in
fertilizers.
It comes up a lot in conversation, but it's insignificant. In general, all this is broken down in less than 3 days (see table page 19 https://www.eawag.ch/fileadmin/Domain1/ ... t_2015.pdf)

If there is a risk of patogenic roundworm eggs, it is better to use it in the garden than after 2 years.

"undegradable molecules" :?: not in the dry toilet, unless you throw your used batteries there, in which case there would be contamination by heavy metals.
