Near 4.000 hectares destroyed by fires in Corsica

Nearly 4.000 hectares of scrub and forests have burned since the start of three fires that started on Thursday in the south of Corsica, a French Mediterranean island, fire commander Bruno Maestracci told AFP on Friday.

The officer said one of the three fires was "fixed" and that the other two, including one near Ajaccio, the main town of the island, continued to progress "but less quickly than Thursday" with wind reversal. The three fires left five firefighters slightly injured. Two horses perished in the flames, about fifty vehicles and ten houses were engulfed in the flames. According to departmental authorities, these fires are mostly of criminal origin, while temperatures have exceeded 40 °, with very low humidity and a sustained wind. More than 500 men, firefighters and soldiers, were mobilized to fight against the flames, with thirteen planes including seven Canadair. Some 200 men were expected as reinforcements on Friday and aircraft rotations, interrupted during the night, were to resume in the morning. (DAD)

The fires that have started since Thursday afternoon in Corse-du-Sud have devastated more than 6.000 hectares of forest and scrub, according to the balance sheet established this morning by the rescue services.

While two of the main fires have been extinguished in the Ortolo valley, south of Sartène, and in the Gravona valley, in the hinterland of Ajaccio, the most significant fire continues to develop in the Aullene region, north of Sartène.

Firefighters hope to overcome it by Sunday evening or Monday morning, thanks to the combined efforts of 200 men with ground response capabilities and an exceptional air system, with seven Canadair and a water bomber helicopter.

This fire has already covered more than 3.500 hectares of vegetation and crossed yesterday afternoon the town of Aullène, without however causing casualties or burning homes.

Also yesterday, a dozen additional fire departures were recorded in Corse-du-Sud, but were immediately reduced by the aerial system.

Three alleged arsonists were to appear in the afternoon before the Bastia Criminal Court, it is said from a judicial source.

Denounced anonymously, two of them, breeders in Nebbio, admitted over the weekend to have lit five fires on July 24 at the end of a well-drunk evening.

The third was arrested in the Evisa region, where he is suspected of setting fire to the maquis the previous week.

Three other arsonists were arrested last week and are expected to be tried in the fall.

Finally, Monday, a 22-year-old farmer was arrested at his home in Cargèse (Corse-du-Sud), by the Ajaccio Research Brigade, we learned from the gendarmerie.

Placed in police custody, he confessed to having committed several firings, in the region of Ajaccio, in the days preceding July 14. The firefighters quickly put an end to these attempts.

On the ground, the firefighters managed to control two fires on three on the island but that of Aullène, near Sartène, continued to incubate on Monday, demanding great vigilance from the firefighters who fear a recovery.

"The fight in the Aullène region is certainly 95% won, but the hardest part remains to be done, because each fumarole constitutes a risk of recovery", explained on Sunday evening Commander Bruno Maestracci, deputy director of the Departmental Fire Service and relief (Sdis).

Since Thursday afternoon, some 6.000 hectares of vegetation have gone up in smoke on the island, a situation favored by strong winds and strong heat.

Flames still ravage the surroundings of Aullène. In Greece, Italy and Spain, vigilance remains essential.

The fire front seems a little calmer on Monday in southern Europe, where eight people have died in recent days, but vigilance remains maximum, especially in Corsica, Spain and Italy. Greece, which last week had been spared from the fires, had to face Sunday the appearance of about fifty fires.

CORSICA: Two new suspected arsonists were arrested on Monday. The first, aged 22, admitted having fired quickly extinguished by the firefighters, north of Ajaccio on July 8 and 14. The second is suspected of being involved in the same arson incident. These arrests bring the number of alleged arsonists arrested in just over a week to eight. Among them, two farmers, 24 and 21 years old, who, according to them, intoxicated, admitted to having lit roadside fires. They are scheduled to appear Monday afternoon before the Bastia Criminal Court.

Firefighters continue Monday to fight the fire that has been raging since Thursday in Aullène (Corse-du-Sud) with 3.500 hectares of forest and maquis burned, by diversifying their strategy to put out the flames. “Yesterday (Sunday), we poured tons of water on the flames but that is not enough. Today, while continuing the aerial rotations to weaken the fire, we are going to draw a line: shave the vegetation over a width of 5 to 10 meters to prevent the flames from passing ”, explained the commander Bruno Maestracci.

Sunday, all available means were deployed on this incident: 400 men, three Canadair, four trackers and a Dash (water bomber planes). During the rescue operations on Sunday, 12 firefighters were slightly injured or severely inconvenienced by smoke, heat and splashes of ash in their eyes. They have received care and their condition is not a cause for concern.

Firefighters are intensifying their efforts on Monday in Corsica to put an end to a fire which has been raging since Thursday near Aullène in Corse-du-Sud.

In total, 5.500 to 6.000 hectares of vegetation have been destroyed since Thursday in three fires - one near Aullène, one in the Péri plain near Ajaccio and a last between Sartène and Bonifacio. For now, the last two are fixed and under surveillance. Around Aullène, in the heart of the Corsican regional park where 3.500 hectares of forest and scrub have already burned down, the firefighters have decided to diversify the modes of attack to overcome the outbreaks. In addition to the tons of water and retardant spilled by the Canadair and Dash to weaken the fire, the command decided to draw a line, i.e. to shave the vegetation over a width of 5 to 10 meters and over several hundred meters long, to prevent the flames from passing, explained Commander Bruno Maestracci. "Of course, it can only be effective if we reduce the intensity of the fire. If the flames are ten meters high, they will jump the obstacle and it will be useless," said the officer.

Eight arrests

The overall burnt area has hardly changed because the current fire is devouring portions of the forest that had been spared until then, within the area concerned. "When the fire advances at high speed as was the case until Saturday, all the plant is not consumed and this gives rise to resumptions", explained Commander Maestracci. The firefighters are thus working to hold the passes of Vaccia and Siu, two locks to the north and south of Aullène, to avoid seeing the flames fall below and ravage other valleys.

On the investigation front, eight suspected arsonists were arrested on the Isle of Beauty in about ten days. Among them, two young farmers, aged 21 and 24, were sentenced Monday to two years and eight months respectively in prison for willful destruction by fire. During the day, the gendarmes of the Ajaccio search brigade also arrested a young man of 22 years old and his accomplice in Sari d'Orcino, in Corse-du-Sud. According to investigators, the young man admitted to having carried out fires quickly extinguished by firefighters, north of Ajaccio on July 8 and 14. Two other arsonists arrested in Haute-Corse are also behind bars awaiting trial in October. Another man suspected of having started a fire was arrested in Haute-Corse but, not having all his reason, he was placed in a psychiatric hospital. Finally a 68-year-old man, arrested near Evisa, was indicted for "involuntary destruction by fire", for having set fire to the forest by burning used tablecloths in the courtyard of his hotel. Under judicial control, he will be tried Tuesday in Ajaccio for immediate appearance.

The last two alleged arsonists who were arrested on Monday a few hours apart in Corse-du-Sud, were volunteer firefighters.

"The decree has not yet been signed but they will be suspended Tuesday morning," reacted the commander of the fire brigade Bruno Maestracci who declared himself "appalled by this affair".

"They set fire when they were instead responsible for fighting fires and protecting property and people. If the facts are true, they deserve to be heavily condemned," he added.

In addition to these two arrests, six other alleged arsonists were arrested on the Isle of Beauty, in about ten days.

Two other arsonists convicted

Two breeders appeared yesterday to have started five fires in Haute-Corse. They were sentenced respectively to two years and eight months in prison, for "deliberate destruction by fire" by the correctional court of Bastia and placed in detention. They admitted to having started five fires in the Rapale region, in Haute-Corse, Friday morning, while they were intoxicated. They risked up to ten years in prison and a € 150 fine.

Jean-Baptiste Bourdiec, 21, who was sentenced to two years in prison, started the fires, while Guillaume Emmanueli, 24, drove the car. It was a newspaper delivery man who saw them act and took down the license plate number of their car. Their sentence is accompanied by a three-year probation, an obligation to compensate their victims and a prohibition to go to the places where they operated.

"It is expensive to pay for fires that covered 300 m2, reacted Michèle Babin, the lawyer of Jean-Baptiste Bourdiec. They were condemned by the forest fires in Corse-du-Sud, they paid for the example. "The prosecutor, Jean-Jacques Fagni, he described the facts" inexcusable, intolerable in a context of incendiary pressure and danger to the environment ".
