That said, I still noticed that in a simple crate (box of reclaimed apples for example) covered with another cardboard (therefore, quite opaque), nothing had germinated, even in more than a month. .

In my opinion, they were dormant!

With a witness (tubers left in the light), we could be sure ...

I have always seen potatoes for consumption, kept in the dark (so as not to turn green), germinate "at a certain time"!

Okay, I don't know, I've never had to keep PDTs for more than a month. The market gardener also had a cold room, so he kept everything in there, so opaque AND cold (and mistakenly thought that it was the light that made them germinate?). Interesting anyway.

For those who talk a lot about storage, I found this document very easily:

The experiment is easy to do: take 2 or 3 tubers which have no germs, which are not treated against germination, and put them in a completely opaque shoebox. You forget them warm. And one day, in 3 months, you will fall on it and you will have "spaghetti" maybe 1 meter!

This is how they do in the ground, right?

Yes of course !

This is another argument that the need for light is not credible ...

When dormancy is over, when the temperature of the soil exceeds around 10/12 ° C, potatoes even 20 cm underground, germinate! [I buried mine less - about ten, but I have no doubt that it would cross 20cm]

To know everything about each variety ...
Do you know this site?
http://www.fiches.arvalis-infos.fr/liste_fiches.php?fiche=var&type=001

I don't know Arvalis but the information is given in the form of an identity sheet for each PDT with:
- Name
- descriptive characters
- Yield (also compared to Bintje as a benchmark)
- Resistance to bio-aggressors
- Culinary and technological characteristics

it depends

There are too many varieties listed in the catalogs. To carry out tests, with repetition, etc. - so that it is meaningful - Arvalis makes choices.

It is an institute more oriented towards advising farmers ... So sometimes, things very popular among amateurs are not found in their lists!

There are other sources, in particular the indications of the breeder or the multiplier:

https://www.legroupeclisson.fr/catalogu ... ente/agria

Click on download the technical sheet at the bottom right of the image.

PS: you will tell me that it is "advertising" then; in fact, not that much! The "notations" keys are standardized; no breeder who targets the professional market, can "burn himself" by saying anything (unlike Youtube or the internet for amateur gardeners): he would completely and for a long time lose the confidence of producers or technical advisers ... It would be suicidal.
