The Three Gorges dam is finished.

The last stone of the largest dam in the world was laid in a ceremony on Saturday.

It is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, erected against the waters of the Yangtze River, the longest river in China.

The dam measures 185 meters high over more than 2,3 kilometers in length. It was built in 13 years, and it took over 28 million cubic meters of cement and over 30 billion dollars to build this giant hydroelectric.

Nevertheless, the dam will not be fully operational before 2008.

This project has been strongly criticized especially for its environmental, cultural and human impact: more than 1,3 million people have been displaced to erect this dam.

Ultimately, the dam should provide 18,2 GW of power, the equivalent of 14 modern nuclear reactors.
