British singer David Bowie will return to theaters as Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla for the film "The Prestige," alongside Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Michael Caine, the Variety daily reported on Monday.

Bowie, whose last major film role was that of pop-art pope Andy Warhol in "Basquiat" in 1996, will play Tesla, one of the pioneers of electricity, in this film about the competition between two magicians directed by Christopher Nolan (“Batman begins”).

A rock icon since the early 1970s, Bowie, 58, made several forays into the cinema, including in Nagisa Oshima's "Furyo" in 1982 and Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation" in 1988.
