1. Overview

The transesterification is the classic technique of biodiesel production.
This is a process in which vegetable oils, animal fats or microalgae based oils are cold mixed with an alcohol (ethanol or methanol) in the presence of a catalyst (sodium or potassium hydroxide) .

2. Chemical equation of the transesterification reaction

Processing oils or fats ethyl or methyl esters can reduce the molecular weight to a third of that of the oil, reducing the viscosity of a factor of eight, to reduce the density and increase the volatility.

Physical properties of the ethyl and methyl esters obtained in the transesterification reaction are then similar to those of diesel oil origin.
