Downpours on Nîmes

New precipitation, sometimes up to 160 millimeters per square meter, according to Météo-France, fell Thursday afternoon in Nîmes and the Gard department, causing numerous floods in this region already affected on Tuesday by torrential rains.

The Gard prefecture has reactivated the crisis unit to manage the consequences of these bad weather which notably led to the interruption of SNCF traffic between Nîmes and Lunel (Hérault) due to flooding near Gallargues (Gard). The A9 motorway was closed in both directions between Orange (Vaucluse) and Narbonne (Aude), as well as the A54 between Nîmes and Salon-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône).

In the center of Nîmes, traffic was difficult because of the flooding of several streets, it was learned from the prefecture. According to the Crisis Staff, most of the departmental roads, south and north of the city, are cut off.

The Vistre, downstream from Nîmes, is in flood and large overflows are to be feared in the southern part of Nîmes as well as in the Petite Camargue, in particular in Vauvert, Le Cailar and Vestric-et-Candiac.

"Today's rainy episode is more important than that of Tuesday, but above all, we were not on a red alert and people were surprised," said Jacques-Olivier Liby, municipal councilor of Nîmes. According to him, "because of the orange alert, many people will realize only in the evening that they cannot return home" ...
