Urban pollution: Milan chooses the congestion charge

After Oslo, Stockholm, Singapore or more recently London, it is Milan's turn to set up, from February 19, a toll intended to raise its congested and polluted city center.

Non-residents will thus have to buy an entry ticket, the price of which will vary according to the pollution caused by their engine. This "green tax" should cost between 3 and 4 euros. The toll will be done first by the purchase of “scratch” tickets then, later, the city will be equipped with gates for automated tolls and electronic terminals.

Every working day, more than 600.000 cars enter Milan where, in 2005, air pollution exceeded the limits 105 days of the year.
