The tissue used as insulation for attics why this solution?

This winter we have improved the insulation in our attics through the bulk of tissue.

Obviously we wanted to use a natural insulationThis dossier aims to introduce this approach and answer the question: why and how we have improved the insulation of our attic with cellulose loose? Here are some answers.

Why the tissue paper?

La cellulose insulation we seemed to be the best compromise econological insulation for the following reasons:

  • excellent insulating properties
  • Easily applicable for any single lost roofs
  • moderate prices and very low in comparison to other natural insulation
  • Good behavior in time
  • Comfort was very good period (much larger heat capacity than synthetic wool)
  • This is an upgraded waste
  • Easy to buy *

* Indeed, currently 2008, it is still very difficult to find some other natural insulators delivered to you (at a good price is not to say 10 times the price of chemical insulation) although I rather regret that our cellulose comes from Austria but now, this country seems to hold the monopole European manufacturer of cellulose insulation.

The straw would have been a more environmentally friendly insulation because its impact is zero but we rejected this solution because its implementation is more difficult and especially find locally is almost impossible (it is obviously not produced industrially).

This choice of cellulose was not instantaneous since a long reflection was conducted on our forums.

What wadding thickness?

We wanted a thermal resistance equivalent to R Thermal regulation 2005 RT2005 be R = 6 6,5 to.

With a lambda 0.04, we must therefore ask about bulk cellulose thickness 25cm.

What price per m²? The natural, environmentally friendly, cheaper than chemical!

We had to isolate 44 m² including an access hatch where it was obviously impossible to put cellulose in bulk. So we opted for a few m² of hemp wool panels and we made a small "formwork" as shown in the page: Loose insulation, preparing attic.

So here are the details of the bill for our insulation:

  • 30 bags 370L: € 428.40 or 11.1 € 3m38.59 is the m3
  • 3 hemp wool panels cm 20: 72.43 2,07 to € ² is the 174.15 € m3
  • Port and shipping: € 86

TOTAL PRICE: 586.83 44 to be 13.37 m² € per m² in R 6,5!

A few comments:

  • This cost is the price delivered but not installed (installation by us)
  • This price per sqm is very reasonable, so unlike what you might think isolate "green" with cellulose is not expensive, quite the contrary!
  • Taking 100% cellulose we would have had a cost of € 10.20 / m² for R 6,5
  • By taking 100% hemp panels however we had a cost of 35.00 € / m² for an 5 R. There we can talk about "ecological luxury", so we used a minimum of hemp!
  • A premium / subsidy (not specific to the laying of natural insulation) can also be attributed to you. In our case, the premium of the Walloon Region is approximately € 160, which is far from negligible.
  • Delivery (not negotiable unfortunately) is a non-negligible additional cost of 15%
  • The loose rock wool is more expensive than celluloseSee picture (catalog LM) below to equivalent thermal resistance is obtained over 20 € / m² for the bulk rockwool!
