Deserted, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, populated by only 2,7 million inhabitants, Mauritania is part of the little envied club of heavily indebted poor countries. In recent years, a hope has animated Mauritanians: oil fields have been discovered in territorial waters, about 90 kilometers from the coast, opposite Nouakchott, the capital.
