The Minister of Energy of the Northern Land of Rhineland - Westpahlie, Axel
Horstmann, and her counterpart at the Ministry of the Environment, Mrs Barbel Hohn, at the Essen E-World Energy Fair, are giving the go-ahead for the creation of a skills network on fuels of the future.
"The competence network should help to reduce the long-term dependence of the German transport sector on oil (currently it is 97%)," said Horstmann. It will also allow new fuels to be introduced and new engines to be developed.
"The development of bioenergies will also create new jobs," said Hohn. "We expect that by 2020, biofuels can cover up to 25% of fuel consumption in Germany. This represents an annual production of 11 milions of tons of fuels and a cultivation area of the order of 3,5 million hectares of rapeseed. This would represent a potential for 175.000 jobs, mostly in the agricultural sector.
