The Day the Earth nearly disappeared

Saturday night on Arte, a show on the mass extinction of the Permian was broadcast.

Much has been questioned about the reasons for the disappearance of the dinosaurs about 63 million years ago. It is often unknown that a much more serious crisis occurred at the end of the Permian period, 250 million years ago. It was the most spectacular extinction in the history of our planet. For many scientists, it is the very principle of life on Earth that has almost been questioned. Until now, despite years of excavations, no one had been able to explain the causes of this catas-trophe. But geologists have recently issued new hypotheses paving the way for the chain climate catastrophe by releasing methane hydrates.

A lesson for our near future?
