The cataglop

Extract from an afp dispatch

PAIMPOL (Côtes d'Armor) (AFP) - To clean ports and watercourses from hydrocarbons and waste, a Paimpol Armor Technique shipyard has developed the "Cataglop", an innovative boat which "sucks" pollution surface by filtering the water.
The Cataglop, "catamaran", and "glop" like the onomatopoeia which illustrates the sound of swallowing, aims to overcome bottles, algae, cigarette butts, pieces of wood, oils, and hydrocarbons, and others floating pollution in ports, but also in lakes, rivers, canals, estuaries, which until now could only be recovered by using a dip net.

"We wanted to diversify our manufacturing, and the environment is a major concern today. We cannot ignore it", explains Jean-Pierre Joliet, head of the company, specializing in the construction of aluminum boats, and designer of the prototype, which required two years of research, and which is visible in the port of Paimpol.

Presented at Pollutec (international exhibition of environmental equipment, technologies and services for industry and local authorities) in Villepinte, the ship, 6 m long and 2,5 m wide, filters the flow surface water circulating between its hulls thanks to its propulsion engine.

"The orientable flow allows suction at all speeds, forward, reverse and even when stationary", underlines Mr. Joliet. "The other boats already launched in this sector only operate in forward gear, which poses a problem when it comes to going in angles."

The "macro-waste" is then stopped in a tilting basket and dumped into a bag located on the deck, while the hydrocarbons and oils are stored floating in a tank with a capacity of 1 m3, before being transferred to land by a pump.

The process was subjected to tests by the Documentation, Research and Experimentation Center for Accidental Water Pollution (Cedre) in Brest, which observed "good performance (...) with flow rates of 5m3 / hour, compatible with pollution. chronic, even accidental, encountered in small and medium-sized ports ".

"Port cities have already declared themselves interested", assures Mr. Joliet. The cost of a cataglop is 72.000 euros.

"We have filed the patent at European and world level. For this model, the market is estimated at 300 boats in France, and we plan to produce some 20 to 30 units per year", explains Jean-Pierre Le Gouriérès, responsible for marketing the boat.

For this, the company will invest in a new workshop, and plans to increase its workforce from 8 to twenty people.

Armor-Technique intends to develop its concept on larger projects, such as a 12m catamaran intended for river canals. "We responded to a call for tenders for the Ourcq canal, for a boat intended to collect dead leaves," said Mr. Le Gouriérès.

In the longer term, a 30 to 40 m depollution boat project for the high seas is being studied.
