Only, we are still at the experimental stage, why? 2014
an additional manufacturing cost for the power plants, sometimes very significant initial additional costs (40% on average according to IFP EN). This cost is passed on to the energy produced;
an additional operating cost: the CO2 capture step is costly in terms of energy. We are talking about an energy penalty. For a power plant, this energy penalty can represent more than 25% of the energy produced.
The cost of the process is currently around 50 to 100 € / t CO2 (60 euros per tonne on average according to the IPCC, of which 85% for capture alone) (1). This cost should be compared with the low price per tonne of CO2 on international carbon markets. Improved processes could reduce these costs.
Storage at source is made essential by the IPCC, but the economy and our habits addicted to fossil fuels
