Consequences of the blockade of the Suez Canal by the container ship Ever Given

Transport and new transport: energy, pollution, engine innovations, concept car, hybrid vehicles, prototypes, pollution control, emission standards, tax. not individual transport modes: transport, organization, carsharing or carpooling. Transport without or with less oil.

Consequences of the blockade of the Suez Canal by the container ship Ever Given

Having the Suez Canal unblocked ... globalization can start again ... pinnnaise, we were hot !! And again it was in the Covid context where the traffic is necessarily weakened a little (no?) : Cry: : Cry: : Cry:

The Suez Canal is unblocked but seven long-term consequences emerge

A week after being stranded in the Suez Canal, a strategic maritime axis for world trade, the container ship Ever Given was, not without difficulty, put back afloat. This extremely rare disaster, which blocked more than 10% of world trade for several days, will have consequences far beyond the transport sector alone. Focus on seven major effects of this blockage.

The race for gigantism called into question

They are colossi with feet of clay. The Ever Given, this enormous boat 400 meters long, capable of carrying 24 containers, symbolizes the failure of these giants of the seas too big to pass the sea routes. Between 000 and 1980, their weight increased fourfold, reports France Culture. If this allows companies to reduce costs, these "megaships" (giant boats) represent a real risk illustrated by the blocking of the Suez Canal which, despite the launch of a huge project in this direction, was slow to adapt. to the size of these vessels.
Ultra-dependence on China brought to light

10 billion dollars worth of goods pass through the Suez Canal every day. Last year 75% of the containers transported came from China, showing Europe's great dependence on Beijing. The Ever Given left on March 4 from the port of Ningbo, in eastern China, and was due to arrive in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. "In the containers, there are both your phone, building components of a car or parts reserved for the construction of wind turbines", explains to France 24 Paul Tourret, director of the Higher Institute of Economy maritime.

Billions of dollars lost every day

If on March 29, the container ship was off on its journey, the executive director of Royal Boskalis, a company commissioned to help clear Ever Given, estimates that it will take another 3,5 days for traffic to resume its cruising speed. . Currently nearly 400 ships are waiting to be able to cross the canal. However, the insurer Allianz estimates that each day of immobilization costs between 6 and 10 billion dollars to world trade. Every hour of blockage, $ 400 million is blown away.

Containers, electronic and medical components

Some 24 containers from Ever Given were stranded for several days… but there are also those transported by the other 000 ships stranded on either side of the 400-kilometer Egyptian canal. This forced immobilization will further increase the tension for certain supplies in Europe. This is the case with electronic parts from China or Taiwan, which could harm the auto industry in particular. This is also the case with the containers themselves. The world is lacking because of the economic recovery. Finally, the European laboratories that manufacture the vaccines could also suffer from delivery delays.

130 sheep stuck in freighters

"The situation is critical and risks becoming an unprecedented maritime tragedy involving live animals." The NGO Animals International has sounded the alarm in recent days regarding the fate of the 130 sheep transported on board boats stuck with the blockage of the Suez Canal. Eleven freighters from Romania, Spain and South America would be affected. If the National Veterinary Health Agency (ANSVA) affirms that the animals will be "unloaded in other ports" if necessary, this situation revives the debate on the transport of live animals. Last month, more than 000 cattle roamed the Mediterranean for more than two months.

Opening to the arctic route

The Suez Canal incident has delighted some. They saw in it a demonstration of the fragility of our supply routes and the need to move towards a more reasonable globalization. The Russian authorities too, but not for the same reasons. They ensure that the blocking of the narrow Egyptian passage is a giant advertisement for the Arctic passage in northern Russia which, with global warming, is increasingly ice-free earlier in the year. The blockade of the Suez Canal "has highlighted the need above all for the further development of the Northern Sea Route", explains Russian diplomat Nikolai Korchounov.

Create rail competition at the canal

There are two possibilities for railways to replace part of the maritime transport. The first would be a 11 kilometer journey from China to the Atlantic. A journey of barely 000 days (compared to 15 by boat) even if each train would have a capacity 60 to 1 times less than a container ship. The other alternative would be a boat / rail mix that would take a high-speed line between Ain Sokhna south of the canal and El Alamein far to the west on the Mediterranean shore. A journey of 000 kilometers covered in a few hours, without counting however the loading and unloading of the boats.
