Kardashev scale, amount of energy of a civilization

by freddau » 10/08/09, 19:50

The Kardashev scale is a general method of classifying civilizations according to their technological level, proposed in 1964 by the Russian astronomer Nikolai Kardashev. It consists of three categories based on the amount of energy available to a given civilization, according to an exponential progression.

The existence of such civilizations remains very hypothetical, but this scale has been taken as the basis of work by SETI project researchers, science fiction writers and futurologists.

Nikolai Kardashev presented his ladder in 1964 at the conference in Byurakan (today in Armenia), which reviewed the program for listening to space by Soviet radio astronomy.

Well it's a little smoky all that.

But already since 1964, scientists have looked into the problem of the energy, so that gives a little hope.

No??

I don't find it so smoky, just a bit "fictional" Science

This is to be compared with the Fermi paradox: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradoxe_de_Fermi

Ah heck, the article is about the Fermi paraxode! : Cheesy:

Small up!

In Kardashev's article it is mentioned that Dyson's sphere is a crazy "project" even for Science Fiction:

It is in fact a thermonuclear reactor with a "natural" core! : Lol:

nice links,

I do not know...

We should start by harnessing the solar energy that arrives on Earth. that would be enough 8)

at the bottom, a good big parabolic mirror, it is nothing other than a sector of sphere of thing, right?

Yes elephant or rather no it is a complete sphere (ideally but impracticable for questions of gravity / resistance of materials).

So yes it is a sphere but of radius 1 parsec : Cheesy: : Cheesy: (in the case of Earth)

Yes if there is no objective to go to TYPE 1 civilization :) (0 = recovery of 100% of terrestrial energy which is already idealistic)

There are 7 types but the last 3 are frankly smoky especially the 7 !!

Type VII: deity capable of creating universes at will, and use them as energy sources. Their energy power is virtually infinite, only limited by the number and size of the universes created, and would rise to the dizzying height of 10 ^ 76 or even 10 ^ 100 W.

A civilization of this type would probably be immortal, because the creation of universes requires that civilization be external to the created universes.

So who said that we consume TOO much energy now? : Mrgreen:

It's good to be ambitious, but ...

I think you're aiming a little high, Dieu Christophe. : Cheesy:

Hihihihi Remundo! This deity makes me laugh ... I will finally know "soon enough" if it is realistic: Image

Just for fun, I invent TYPE VIII: deity capable of creating slave gods creators of universes. : Mrgreen:

Better than dark vader and palpatine combined! : Lol:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alderson_disk here is a more realistic version of the Dyson sphere whose article in English is more detailed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere

Moreover there is also a "2d" version of the Dyson sphere, the Dyson disk:

Image

In fact it is just one of the elements of the sphere:

Ah well the future, I can't wait to see what happens : Mrgreen: : Mrgreen:
