The "Blob": monocellular species, half fungus, half yeast

by Christophe » 13/06/17, 19:20

Eggs are no longer the largest cells on Earth ... make way for the "Blob" ...

The "Blob", the creature that frightens biologists

It is neither a plant nor an animal. Just a single cell, unique, moving and ... intelligent! A true prodigy of evolution.

It sounds like a big joke from a biologist. Imagine an animal or plant organism or fungus made up of a single gigantic cell - likely to cover 10 m2, or even more - raffolating oatmeal and egg whites. Funny.

Imagine now that this creepy and slobbering unicellular being able to solve mathematics problems effortlessly, learn new behaviors and even transmit these teachings to his fellows; In short, a sort of learned mold. Very funny...

But no, not funny at all: "This organism, Physarum polycephalum, exists on Earth for at least 500 million years and thrives in the undergrowth," said Audrey Dussutour, the UFO's global specialist at the Center Research Center on Animal Cognition (Paul-Sabatier University, Toulouse). "We call him 'Blob', referring to an American horror film by 1958 that made Physarum the main character seeking to invade the planet. "It's a totally crazy, incredible, fascinating organism," says Carsten Janke, a specialist in eukaryotes at the Institut Curie (Paris).

Furiously strange and frankly invasive

As seasoned as they are, the biologists who have looked at the Blob have always found it furiously strange: horribly difficult to place on the tree of the living - it has only just been classified among the amoebozoa -, oddly organized with this single cell comprising millions of nuclei bathed in the same cytoplasm, frankly invasive with its tendency to overflow Petri dishes overnight at a growth rate of up to 4 cm per hour. Not to mention its ability to "resuscitate" after having undergone a frank desiccation ...

Very interesting but not "maddening". It's really "Science & Life": always maddening.

On one side they say:
"Imagine now that this creepy and slobbering unicellular being able to solve mathematics problems effortlessly, learn new behaviors and even transmit these teachings to his fellows; In clear, a sort of scholarly mold."
And on the other:
"This organism, Physarum polycephalum, exists on Earth for at least 500 millions of years and thrives in the undergrowth"

The thing would be "scholarly" but it has vegetated all the same for 500 million years! What does she do with her "knowledge"? :)

That said, I discover, it's amazing.

Question by passing to vegetarians and veganists: does eating conform to his food religion?

This level of ignorance and stupidity is a complete failure.
Humans, VGs or carnists all eat products containing cells. Does your food religion forbid you or compel you to eat snake, live monkey brain, do you consume lizard or hedgehog, dog, cat, human or Does religion select its products?

The question was obviously not "Can a vegetarian eat cells?" but "Is the Blob considered vegetal?"

Question asked, certainly, in an ironic, but not devoid of interest.

Gaston hello

The answer can be declined in several points following its reflection:
Question by passing to vegetarians and veganists: does eating conform to his food religion?

1) VegetablesREggs, dairy products and, in general, eggs, it is not vegetable and therefore to be compared with this blob.
2) VegetablesLNo animal products or animal products such as dairy products are consumed. This is based on the mammalian animal world, which stops breastfeeding at the right time, during gradual weaning when the child can consume his parents' food, other than milk, which is specific to his nature and Will never again consume. So the youngsters have compulsorily consumed their mother's milk (not the neighboring livestock) and therefore food of animal origin.
3) Vegans, therefore VGL, are not limited to the stage of food consumption, but exclude everything that is of animal origin (such as skins for example). For more information see their sites.
4) " Eat that is in accordance with his food religion Do you consider your food consumption as a religion? And it is not in the ironic tone since it SE Takes himself very seriously, despising scientists specialized in anatomy-biology! : Evil:
5) The question of may or ought to be applied to a particular dietary mode can not be confused. I can Consume deadly mushrooms, but does I need it for example? This last point is linked to experimental knowledge, not to technical-scientific knowledge. But not all fungi are fatal, some only create organic disorders: should we eat them even though other living forms can do so without risk? There are non-poisonous mushrooms, some of which are bland and must be strongly accommodated to be "consumable" because in their initial form the taste system would reject them as uninteresting.
It is these different aspects that determine a dietary mode adapted to a particular physiology and not to a well-established culture, which has oriented society towards different dietary behaviors and often in opposition to natural biological mechanisms.
6) and finally the blob can be considered as a plant, I have no idea, let the researchers find an answer. The question is rather: who is going to eat it?

Normal to make a little sensation to be seller.

It is still teams of researchers who have studied his case https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physarum_ ... rentissage And it is fascinating all that a single-celled organism can do.

It would still be necessary for a myxomycete to be edible to cause food provocation ... only the appearance : Oops:

What bothers me in "The" Blob ", the creature that panics biologists" is the word "creature" used all the time.
Why give credence to creationism, good God of good God?

We are all creatures of the great creator! hihihihihi : Cheesy:

Good without laughing, it reminds me of the studies that have been done on the mycelia that retrace road or rail networks, for example:

Ah bin it is also the "blob" Physarum polycephalum which made this exploit ...

Not so stupid these ... creatures ... : Cheesy:

(Well there were some drownings in the Mediterranean and atlantic nevertheless : Mrgreen: ...)

Why give credence to creationism, good God of good God?

He has become a frog of holy water, invoking a GOOD god, why not a wicked god?

creature:
Product of any specific nature
http://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/cr%C3%A9ature

I would say even more : " God damn god damn it! "
You may have been baptized by your parents and you have become Catholic (or Protestant) indelibly until the end of your earthly days. Crap of shit!
You are engaged or will do it: Catholic institution
You got married or will be: Catholic institution
You are in 2017 after the birth of JC: Catholic institution (false besides)
You celebrate Christmas: Catholic institution.
The reform of the Julian calendar in Gregorian by a Pope Gregory 13: Catholic institution
Monogamy: the Catholic Church
You have a name that appears on the calendar: the Catholic church and its saints
Etc ... whether you like it or not you swim in it up to the neck, but you can remove all that obviously!
take three or more women and your girl as many, if not more; celebrate your new year on July 14 and of course take up the revolutionary calendar and baptize your children in the atheistic faith. "Good god of good god of brothel shit "! : Evil:
