Electric truck and autonomous, in Sweden.

Driverless electric truck starts deliveries on Swedish public road

Resembling the helmet of a Star Wars stormtrooper, a driverless electric truck has a public road to deliver on public road in Sweden, on what developer Einride and logistics customer DB Schenker described as a world first.

Robert Falck, the CEO of Swedish start-up Einride, said the company was in partnership with major suppliers to help scale production and deliver orders, and the firm did not rule out future tie-ups with large truckmakers.

"This public road is a major milestone ... and it is a step to commercializing autonomous technology on roads," the Volvo trainer told Reuters.

Einride's T-Pod is 26 when 60 percent versus a diesel truck with a driver.

Besides Schenker, Einride has orders from German grocer Lidl, Swedish delivery company Svenska Retursystem and five Fortune 500 retail companies, underpinning its ambition to have 200 vehicles in operation by the end of 2020.

T-Pod trucks have a capacity of 20 tons.

Autonomous and supervised remotely

Einride's T-Pods are "driven" by semi-autonomous driving software, but supervised by a human, remotely, like drones, in a control center grouping operators who each manage several trucks. Maneuvers around warehouses can be done by remote operators if the truck is confused by an obstacle or unexpected traffic. Einride says that in an integrated network operating optimally, each operator could take care of ten trucks, reducing the labor force.

Tesla announces that its "Semi" heavyweight will (finally!) Go into production this year

Yannick Smaldore July 22, 2021

According to our colleagues from Electrek, this time would be the good one! Tesla's semi-trailer, simply referred to as Semi, is expected to go into production by the end of the year. The new assembly line in Nevada is said to be in its final adjustments.

If the Tesla Semi keeps all of its promises, it could fundamentally disrupt part of the road transport market.

The Tesla Semi was long overdue

By force, we no longer hoped, but it does seem that the first Tesla Semi will roll off the line this year. When the program was announced in 2017, the first deliveries were expected in 2019. Two versions of the Semi were then considered: a model at 150 dollars for a range of about 000 km, and a model at 500 dollars with 180 km of autonomy. But quickly, the schedule slips slightly, which is not usual in Elon Musk's businesses. In January 000, Tesla confirms that production will finally start in the following months, promised, sworn.

In the end, the Covid crisis and delays on the construction chain site in Nevada will get the better of this promise. These additional delays will also allow Tesla's teams to improve their copy, in order to make the Semi even more efficient and more competitive. For the engineers in charge of the project, and Elon Musk, the idea is to be able to quickly offer a range of more than 1 km, in order to make the Tesla Semi definitively competitive against diesel-powered trucks.

Revolutionizing road transport?

The Tesla Semi is eagerly awaited by all transport specialists. If the vehicle keeps its promises in terms of range, towing capacity, ease of maintenance and operational costs, it could indeed revolutionize a large part of the transport market. While Tesla could be one of the first users of the vehicle, to manage its own supply chains, many other major companies, including Pepsi and Walmart, have already made significant pre-orders for the Semi.

For regular road freight lines, which connect the same warehouses and delivery points on a daily basis, the electric semi-trailer could be an excellent solution, at the same time economical, silent and less emitting of microparticles. This type of solution could also be ideal in certain protected areas, or in valleys particularly exposed to pollution from road transport.

However, long haul road transport, which is very common in North America, will be much more difficult to convert to electric trucks. Not only are the distances traveled much greater (several thousand kilometers), but they are often done in record times that are hardly compatible with electric recharging. In any case, in the United States as in Europe, the low number of charging points compatible with electric trucks should limit the use of electric semi-trailers for international or long-distance transport for a long time to come.
