If you pass in the Pyrenees I encourage you to go see the real experience, the solar oven Odeillo: the guided tour of Heliodyssee museum includes a demonstration of this kind, with a mirror and a smaller steel certainly end but also very spectacular. (Weather permitting of course)

Y also has the Themis power plant in France which makes high temperature testing. It has also become the 1ere site activity.

I did not know that Odeillo they based materials.
I thought it was a "simple" solar stirling.

So at Odeillo in the big oven (photo above) they make high temperature tests to laboratories and industrial (this is the only activity, well established, permanent.)
So yes they melt materials, among other
The demonstration of the tour they are not with the big furnace 1 megawatt :D This is a small set heliostat + parable outside that serves (more) than that

At Themis plant (Targassonne) I do not know if they make thermal tests now, but in any case they have electricity in the past (an old boiler Themis is also exposed near the oven Odeillo).

The Odeillo solar Stirling is a small dish or 2 3m more experimental than anything else, this is really not the main business site

PS: I took some pictures, I'll put just now

Ah ok there 2 facilities in Odeillo, I mix can be so ...

In any case one thing is: Themis produces more energy ...

Hello
The "small" stirling dish must be a little more than "2 or 3m" :?
http://rdm.cnrs.fr/IMG/pdf/26_06_07_Dishstirling_Guillot.pdf
eg diameter 8.5m
Nominal area: 52,86 m2
total net area: 56,75 m2
970 collected surface in W / m2: 51 kW (Odeillo full parabola)
Limited surface with strips "Odeillo" 42,74 m2

At the entrance of the museum of the great Odeillo solar furnace is exposed the steel plate:

If my memories are correct (because they date: the great furnace of Odeillo, it is after all the years' 70) they did a lot of testing of refractory materials at their beginnings and also fusion tests without input of materials " parasites "(fuel, furnace refractory)
