Grant spiro pell: smoke in the pellet hopper on my pellet boiler?

by Almavla » 03/01/22, 17:42

Hello,
This year I changed my wood boiler for a pellet boiler, not having room for a silo I have a tank of about 200kgs next to my boiler, I had 2 to 3 problems with the ignition but what terrified me the most is that just now smoke was coming out of the pellet tank !!!! Is this normal ??? Is it dangerous ?? Can the granules catch fire?
Thank you for your answers.

Put the silo next to the "good idea" boiler. You have your answer.

Normally, a valve system isolates the stock of pellets from the burning part. If this is not the case, which is likely since there is a passage of gases, it is imperative at least that this tank is urgently made perfectly airtight.
It is difficult to establish a truly relevant corrective diagnosis without further details.

A photo of your installation, not the catalog.

No, that's not the problem, it's even recommended by a lot of manufacturers to have a movable hopper close to the boiler (1 or 2 m3) when you cannot have a "hard" silo ...

It is the worm that plays this role of valve ...

A boiler is like a pellet stove, it works in depression! So technically except big defect (and therefore safety) it is impossible to have a rise of smoke in the silo!

In my opinion the smoke does not come from the boiler but can be of a poor quality of pellet (or which would have taken the humidity) and which would start to ferment and heat? A compost smokes ....

What does the smoke smell like?

Re: Grant spiro pell: smoke in the pellet container on my pellet boiler?

Yes, the endless screw, but above all the reversal of the direction of the feed tubes and the fall by gravity which introduces a break in physical contact between the upstream and downstream granules.
I do not believe in the fermentation hypothesis, because the granules are too dry to allow it and would be in "porridge" if it were not the case ... Perhaps there is a problem with the level of the silo cover gasket?

Must see how it was cobbled together.
