Chemistry: ash wood, aluminum and green water ??

by Christophe » 06/01/16, 11:57

A seal containing a bottom of wood ash gives, with rainwater, green water ...

I emptied it (just the water) for the first time, thinking that it was an algae that had developed but less than 24 hours after being rewound, a greenish water appears ...

Anyone know the chemical origin?

The seal is made of aluminum (or aluminum alloy ... zamac style)

Beside I have another aluminum container which does not contain ash, which takes the same water and it remains clear ...

Quick response:
the ashes are known to contain potash with a strong corrosive base, which attacks aluminum slowly (very classic) and the color comes from what is in the soluble ash, even traces of various salts, silicates, therefore alums ((who have the color in this bucket on wikipedia !! ) like copper old treatments on plants (vines, etc.) or other metal that has a green color !!

It is therefore the combined action of ash and aluminum! Thank you!

Damn me who thought I had radioactive ash : Mrgreen:
