Books to read on the political ecology

by greymar » 06/04/16, 20:08

Hello,

I come to see you for my first message to ask you for some help. :)

I try to make lists of books to read in various streams of thought. My request is:

- what are the important or major books to read in the field of political ecology or "philosophical" ecology (I don't know if that is said)?

I am gathering sources to make relevant lists about ecology so any help is welcome. Thank you in advance !

PS: My site: http://www.quetedusavoir.com (still under construction, I still have plenty of thought to do)

If you are interested in this area, it is a little surprising that you do not have too much idea on the question ...
In the beginning, the classics like "silent spring"Of Rachel Carson, one of the first...; André Gorz, with notably, "Ecologica"; François Roddier and his "Thermodynamics of evolution; Robert Kurz with "Lives and Death of Capitalism ", and other titles in which he makes the connection between ecological problems and the social mode of production ...; Alain Gras with, (but not only) "The choice of fire"...
Many more ...

Obviously, among the classics, the timeless (it's a way of talking!) Ivan Illitch, and someone he inspired a lot: Jacques Éllul... More recently, the "decreases" (to simplify!) Paul Ariès et Serge Latouche...

Here is an attempt to build a list:

General 1
Ecology and politics (André Gorz)
Ecologica (André Gorz)
Complete works: Tome 1 (Ivan Illich)
Complete works: Tome 2 (Ivan Illich)

General 2
Ecology, how many divisions? (Corinne Morel-Darleux, Fabrice Flipo, Christian Pilichowski)
Political Ecology: Cosmos, Communities, Environments (Emilie Hache)
Decay: A new political project (Paul Ariès)
Murray Bookchin for a social and radical ecology (Murray Bookchin)

Philosophy
For an ecological political philosophy (Fabrice Flipo)
Voluntary simplicity against the myth of abundance (Paul Aries)
Seven Paths to Ecology (Edward Goldsmith)
Ecology, community and lifestyle (Arne Naess)

Theory
A Society to Redo - Towards an Ecology of Freedom (Bookchin Murray)
Decay: Entropy-Ecology-Economy (Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen)
Capitalism, socialism, ecology: Disorientation, orientations (André Gorz)
Thermodynamics of evolution "An essay on thermo-bio-sociology" (François Roddier)

What do you think ? While knowing that I have to read everything to really have a relevant list so this is not definitive.

a) I also advise you: The Hidden Face of Greenpeace https://books.google.be/books/about/La_ ... sc=y&hl=fr

This book will add a little concrete, ground, to your list which seems quite general and theoretical all the same. But it's true that you ask for books on "political" ecology ... but given the media strike power that Greenpeace has acquired over the years, I think we can say that it does Politics...

Then what is politics in the age of the Internet? Anyone can do politics by exposing their ideas to the world ...

b) Do you "have to" read everything? Whose complete work of Ivan Illich?
Do you write a thesis on economics, sociology or philosophy?

c) Regarding François Roddier we talk about it a lot here: Company-and-philosophy / Francois-Roddier-thermodynamics-and-society-t13156.html (if that can help you?)

The "concrete" is not what is lacking and the abundance of facts largely explains the incomprehension, only a synthetic approach makes it possible to give meaning to the imbroglio of the real and to avoid the impasse of a criticism. superficial and truncated.

You can't ignore "Robert Kurz", one of the major thinkers of our time ...

Concrete ... in books? On paper, then?

We obviously do not have the same conception (or scale) of the concrete? There are millions of good ecological intentions ... moreover, no one, even the worst (shale gas, deforsteurs ...), dares to say that ecology is shit ... all manufacturers play on their "green" image ...

In fact in 2016 everyone is green ... but in fact (even the little ones every day), of course, it's something else ...

I do not know of any major country that has a national ecological political agenda.
In small country there is Costa Rica ... which now produces 100% of its electricity from renewable sources ...

But it's not the only one: http://www.lejournalinternational.fr/Si ... a2946.html

Christopheyour answer is incomplete (first sentence?), nevertheless I understand that I have not been clear, hence your mistake.

Political ecology is a tension towards what does not exist and it would disappear if it managed to incarnate itself in the reality of the world.
From now on, the whole of humanity is governed by one and only functioning system, capitalism; from this point of view, it is obvious that ecology can not coexist with its opposite and that it is in order for capitalism to continue to prosper (?) that it is necessary for the latter to give the wrongdoing by pretending to worry about what he's basically forced to destroy.
