Bordeaux: A free heated building thanks to energy from processors

UPDATED 18 / 10 / 18

Beginning 2019, this innovative real estate project, located in the district of Grand Park in Bordeaux, will be delivered ...

From the outside, the real estate project underway on the course Emile-Counord, in the district of Grand-Parc in Bordeaux, looks like many others. We must look at its heating system to understand the innovation that will be inaugurated in the future home of the Department and 49 new social housing.

The start-up Parisian Qarnot Computing will install 346 radiators, which recover and distribute the heat from computer calculations, by the beginning 2019 delivery. The project involving the Department, the lessor Gironde Habitat and the start-up has been under construction for two and a half years.

To heat up avoiding a loss of energy
Rather than finance an air-conditioning system to cool gigantic data centers, Qarnot Computing has developed a new model that involves creating mini data centers inside these heaters. "With microprocessors and motherboards, we dissipate the heat instead of witnessing its loss," Quentin Laurens summarizes the company Qarnot Computing.

The investment for Gironde Habitat, which was responsible for the construction of this project of solidarity pole by the Department, is about 2 700 euros by radiator, a cost much higher than a conventional radiator but which will be amortized at seven to eight years. "Qarnot Computing provides maintenance and replaces defective devices," says Sigrid Monnier, General Manager of Gironde Habitat. We are going on a long-term use, with no cost of exploitation. The heating will be completely free for the occupants and they will also benefit from information on the air quality of their accommodation.

BNP Parisbas makes this possible by entrusting 25% of its regulatory calculations to Qarnot, "being a quarter of the group's risk calculations," said Vincent Thiéry, Director of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine BNP Paribas Region. The start-up also works with animation studios 3D, actors of scientific research but the banking sector is particularly buoyant.

"The fuel here is confidential computer banking calculations, and it has been difficult, at the regulatory level, to run them in social housing," says Miroslav Sviezeny, co-founder of Qarnot Computing. "The 0 risk for hacking does not exist but here it would not be very interesting," says the co-founder. This decentralized solution means that there is only one access to a piece of data. "It specifies that data stock prices will circulate and not customer data.

And to heat the water?
This is the first installation of these innovative devices in a new building, but the start-up has already installed a thousand radiators in France, as part of rehabilitations. This model will be on the other hand the first to be equipped with Wifi.

Qarnot Computing, created in 2010, employs 30 people and generates a turnover of 2 million euros. She is working on a processor project to heat domestic hot water which should lead to the first quarter 2019. She is also in discussion with a "very big Parisian lessor", slips Miroslav Sviezeny.

Indeed, it looks like green-washing. And for maintenance, they will have to make a letter to the tenant to ask permission to intervene?
The reporter may be misinformed, the data center is probably in one room and its cooling circuit, coupled with the central heating of the building ... winter only :?: The main thing is to water elected officials with an "innovation".

Even if it's true, it does not make sense http://www.lefigaro.fr/societes/2015/10 ... ateurs.php

Moreover, as techniques evolve, they are more and more efficient, while developing more and more. It is Philippe Bihoux who estimates that more than all French electricity is needed to ensure the global energy consumption of "DATA".
