Coronavirus: effectiveness of types of masks and manufacture of a homemade respiratory mask

by Christophe » 26/03/20, 15:05

Here is a little tutorial how to make sanitary masks in less than 10 minutes with 5 mm of filter cotton made from DIY masks that we can (still ??) find everywhere!

As our dear authorities are unable to provide masks to the population, let's be clever and resourceful!

These masks can be decontaminated in the oven for 5 minutes at over 70 ° C + 1 shot of aerosol disinfection product as soon as you get home!

It's not paranoid, the Covid19 virus can attach to airborne particles: health-pollution-prevention / the-covid19-can-it-be-semi-air-via-the-particles-pollution-pollens-fog-t16375.html

0) Wash your hands

1) Gather the material ...

- I have on hand 5 masks (including 2 already used ...)
- Some cotton pads left by my many ex (just enough to make 2 masks)
- Bulk wipes (for joining the kid)
- Sanytol (for later ...)

2) Distribute the cotton pads on the 1st mask, putting a little disinfectant

3) Gather the 2 masks, I thought I should staple them but it fits well with the 2 elastic bands:

4) Must make a joint for the kid otherwise it does not stick enough to his face, loose wipe simply stapled ...

5) Do not forget to identify the masks and the sub-masks so as not to mix everything!

It may be necessary to improve the seal between the 2 masks?

It's ugly but it's cheap, fast, available and maybe it can save lives!

If you have suggestions for improvement or remarks ... I take it!

And for equipped seamstresses (I am not one and I am not equipped) you can make the "deluxe" version:

It seems to me that there is a problem, your cotton circles are disjointed. So the air will carefully bypass them to move to the easiest, on the smallest thickness ..... so it is as if they were not there. AMHA the added thickness must be continuous to avoid this problem.

Often these DIY masks are very tight on the edges (especially between the nose and the cheekbones). The models with 2 elastics seem to me more effective on that side. We must be able to recover the elastics from the old ones to staple them to the new ones (after disinfection : Wink: )

For disinfection, what do you think of the microwave path? (The metal bar to form the passage around the nose will not help us ....)

Hmmm ... yes that's not wrong! Hence my remark on jointing!

But the elastic of this mask (the 1st in the direction of the aspiration) is a little more tense than the internal mask ... which should compress, slightly, the cotton ...

So I'm going to "bulk" the cotton! Thank you, you may have saved our life! : Oops:

Otherwise bin I must find sanitary towels then !! Will I ask the neighbor? : Mrgreen:

You answered no? In addition I stapled that of the kid! : Cheesy:

And the microwave only heats the chiral molecules (or something like that) ...

Not sure that it heats the cotton so (except via the water that is contained in it) ...

I followed your Flytox advice, here is version 1.1 I put the cotton loose and attached the 1st mask ...

I have not yet stapled the 2 masks: I wanted to leave them "removable" in order to disinfect the cotton, but ultimately what good is it? A passage in the oven and it's good the ugly covid is in PLS!

This version is much more "rigid" when placed on the face than the 1st version ...

To adjust the tension of the rubber bands, I use a "bitoniau" like this:

When we observe the different masks for DIY, except for the valve, the difference is mainly at the joints:
FFP1: no seals
FFP2: seal at the nose
FFP3: seal all around the mask
Left: FFP2, right: FFP3

Otherwise, my decontamination enclosure is operational:

I replaced the thermostat 75 ° C which limited the temperature by a 100 ° C, the enclosure now caps at 75 ° C, enough to cook point corona virus : Cheesy:
The cooling / heating element is a Peltier 12V / 50W TEC1-12705 module, the whole consumes 33W at 230V once the temperature has stabilized at 75 ° C.
