Record 2010 of electricity consumption (EDF RTE)

by Christophe » 20/01/11, 17:49

In 2010, electricity consumption broke all records

Electricity consumption reached a record in 2010, exceeding 500 TWh. The annual electricity report published by RTE also notes an increase in peak consumption and a growth in production from renewable sources.

The manager of the RTE electricity transmission network published Thursday, January 20, the 2010 French electricity report which looks back at the major trends of the year.

French electricity consumption increased by 5,5% compared to 2009 and reached 513 TWh. It is the first time that French annual consumption has exceeded 500 TWh, according to RTE. Two-thirds of this increase comes from the effect of temperatures in 2010, the coldest since 1987 according to Météo France. The third third corresponds to structural growth, linked to the economic recovery and the development of electrical uses.

Low voltage consumption (households, professionals, public services, tertiary) increased by 7% (+ 1,5% in climate-adjusted data). Consumption in the industry increased by 3,7% compared to 2009, without however returning to the levels of 2008 or 2007.

The peak winter phenomenon on the rise

On three occasions, the maximum consumption values were reached in 2010 (on February 11, consumption reached 93.080 MW, on December 14, 94.600 MW and on December 15, 96.170 MW). The reason ? A particularly cold year, with temperatures below seasonal norms of 8,5 ° C in February and 6,3 ° C in December. As a reminder, RTE estimates that 6 ° C lower on the thermometer corresponds to 15.000 MW of additional consumption. The preponderance of electric heating in France increases this sensitivity during cold periods.

However, in 2010, RTE noted that import capacities were not saturated. There was no tension on the French electrical system.

In Brittany and in the east of the PACA region, where the risks of supply disruption are significant, alerts The Ecowatt system, inviting citizens to limit their consumption, has been launched several times (7 orange alerts in Brittany and 15 in PACA, 5 red alerts in Brittany). The implementation of this system in these two regions would nevertheless have made it possible to reduce power consumption during peak hours by 1,5%.

Renewable energy continues to grow but is still a minority

CO2 emissions increased by 3% in 2010, half the rate for which French electricity production falls under RTE. In 2010, 34,1 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted for the production of French electricity, including 31,2 Mt by fossil fuel thermal power plants and 2,9 Mt by biomass. Peak consumption emits a lot of carbon.
