Heavy rainfall led to floods and led to numerous security operations in the communities of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez Thursday, October 22, said the prefecture of Var in a statement.
The heavy rains at the end of the afternoon and in the first part of the night caused overflows of rivers in the municipalities of Grimaud, Cogolin, Sainte-Maxime, as well as Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle.
Some 150 firefighters carried out safety, using a dozen canoes. Several roads are impassable or have been cut by the gendarmerie to avoid the accumulation of vehicles in dangerous areas, which has caused significant traffic problems.
Evacuating
In Sainte-Maxime, where pumping operations were underway Thursday evening, around thirty vehicles were damaged. Companies have also allegedly suffered damage in the industrial area of Camp Ferrat.
In Grimaud, about fifty people were gathered in the municipal hall, said the prefecture. Thirty houses have been damaged in the Pommiers district. Companies have also suffered damage in the Grand Pont artisanal area.
The town halls of Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle have opened their municipal halls to accommodate evacuees or those who have preferred to evacuate their homes.
The Var prefecture indicates that it has opened a crisis unit bringing together firefighters, gendarmes and personnel from the prefecture.
Extreme caution remains advised, the authorities warn, ice jams accumulated in watercourses can slow the flow of water and worsen certain submersions.
The area concerned had already suffered from major floods on September 18 and 19 and the state of natural disaster had been recognized
