The official record of Typhoon Morakot is getting heavier every day. In total, 461 dead and 192 missing were recorded on Tuesday August 25 by the Taiwan government after the typhoon 8 August passed. 46 people were injured by the bad weather that devastated the island.

110 billion

The economic impact of Typhoon Morakot, valued at 110 billion Taiwan dollars (3,4 billion US dollars) by the August 14 government, could be limited but is expected to worsen the recession that is affecting Taiwan.
The government is expected to submit a special budget this week to cover damage to agriculture, tourism, infrastructure and housing.
According to forecasts by the SinoPac institute, the amount of damage could represent for Taiwan a further contraction of 0,53% of its GDP in 3e quarter and 0,13% over the year.
For 2009, Taiwan forecasts a contraction of 2,5% of its GDP.
Morakot is the worst typhoon that has hit Taiwan, said President Ma Ying-jeou, adding that its magnitude would be greater than that of the typhoon that 1959 had made 667 dead and 1.000 missing.
It will take about six months to rebuild the roads and bridges destroyed by Morakot, which will likely make it impossible for residents to return quickly to many remote mountain villages, the transport minister said.
