45% of French favor ecological tax
Nearly one in two French (45%) believes it is necessary to tax products with a negative impact on the environment, according to a Eurobarometer survey published this week. In return, they want green products to be tax-advantaged. Overall, the principle of a product tax with a negative impact on the environment is supported by 46% of Europeans surveyed, provided that green products are, at the same time, reduced in weight. This idea is welcomed more favorably in the United Kingdom (65%) or Denmark (56%) than in Portugal or Italy (34%).
In full debate on the carbon tax, the French are 45% to approve the idea of a tax on products harmful to the environment, while applying a tax advantageous on ecological products. 32% only want a lower tax on green products, and 18% are in favor of a single tax on pollutants.
In addition, 83% of Europeans surveyed say that the environmental impact of products has an important or very important role in their purchasing decision. This proportion reaches 92% in Greece, 87% in France, but is limited to only 62% in the Czech Republic. This survey was conducted between the 21 and the 25 April 2009 from 26.500 citizens of 27 EU countries, aged 15 years old and up.
