Belgium leads the waste traffic

The World Customs Organization (WCO) has taken action to combat the illegal transport of waste between Europe, Africa and Asia. Called "Operation Demeter", the operation led to the seizure of 30.000 tonnes of waste between March and May of this year, mainly in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. This is what the Dutch-speaking press reported on Thursday.

Some 60 countries were participating in the operation, which aimed to monitor particularly the transport of waste in some 300 ports. Thus, for five days, all shipments of waste were systematically checked in the port of Antwerp. In five days, fourteen illegal shipments were seized. (HIE)
