The News of Econology in Israel and Hebrew

by Christophe » 12/05/06, 12:18

I recently spoke with an Israeli from a Kibbutz who writes in his local newspaper, the "News of econology" of which here are the scans and the translation (for those who, like me, do not have too much knowledge of Hebrew) .

A good example of offshoring :).

The Hebrew article:

The translation :

News from Econology No. 8

In Israel and around the world
- The largest power plant in Tel Aviv was forced by the Greens to suspend its production of fuel oil, and to replace it with natural gas. The director of the plant claims that 75% of the pollution in Tel Aviv is caused by car traffic. Perhaps he is right, but one pollution does not justify another. As for the Tel Aviv Greens, they are jubilant!

- As in most countries, in Israel, environmental protection no longer focuses solely on the damage that man causes to nature. Faced with polluters, the justice system now uses economic deterrence. For example, the Tel Aviv Court of First Instance sentenced a company active in the construction and monitoring of new projects to a fine of 100 Shekels for non-conforming garbage disposal.

- The Kziv river, one of the most picturesque in the country, crosses almost the entire western Galilee from east to west, and passes near many villages. In recent years the river has become one of the most polluted rivers in the country. Computer carcasses float on the water with those of animals and up to the mouth in the Mediterranean, are added other carrion, as well as manure and waste flows of all kinds, then that the purification plant exists, but does not work… A guidebook of this tourist region par excellence expresses its bitterness: “I can only cry…”

- A few weeks ago, an ant endemic to South America was discovered in the Jordan Valley. Since then, the "little fire ant" (its name in the Andes) has become a veritable biological invasion and defensive measures will be adopted, but they are still in their initial stages.

- An oil tanker having accidentally struck a shoal, 3000 tonnes of fuel were spilled in the Suez Canal. The driftwater is heading towards the Red Sea.

- On March 1, 2006, a conference opened in Bangkok bringing together the states of Southeast Asia bordering the Pacific Ocean to Australia, with the aim of saving the sea turtle from disappearance. To strengthen this hope, 2006 has been declared "Year of the Turtle"

To reflect and learn more

- Biodiversity: Israel is a state whose area is small but its share in the world biological diversity is important. In Israel live and multiply 2388 different plant species, more than 100 species of mammals and around 450 species of birds. These figures are close to those of California which is on the same parallel, but with an area 14 times that of Israel. Sustainability, that is to say the conservation of natural resources, will ensure the sustainability of the human species in all its diversity, for generations to come. May 22 of each year has been chosen by the UN as the International Biodiversity Day and in 2006 its motto will be “Protecting Biodiversity”.

- Remaining on the same subject, in March 2006, a conference will bring together 2000 European delegates whose task will be to decide on the measures to be taken in order to slow down the decrease in biodiversity in Europe, consequence of the rapid development which continues there at the expense of nature, fauna and flora.

- The kick-off has just been given in France to an international effort aimed at transforming the building industry into a "green industry". In France the turnover of this branch of activity is enormous and several of its giants have taken joint responsibility and founded the Company SBCI (Sustainable Building and Construction Initiative), whose mission is to promote in the construction industry. building environmentally friendly working methods, starting with France and then spreading the standard worldwide.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions.
