The Covid-19 shows that in the hospital, "the outsourcing of services has its limits"

STRASBOURG, June 29, 2020 (TecHopital) - François Xaintray, director of infrastructure and Cédric Boulay, maintenance engineer at Strasbourg University Hospitals (HUS) shared their experience of managing Covid-19, in an online conference organized on June 24 by the Association of Hospital Engineers of France (IHF).

Strasbourg hospitals have been hit hard by the epidemic. "We had to adapt to the hour, to the massive arrival of patients, since at the height of the crisis we saw the arrival of up to 60 patients per day. We have suffered an extraordinary rise in the number of patients in just 15 days, "explained François Xaintray and Cédric Boulay.

On March 12, the white plan was launched. On March 14, the biomedical teams began to equip additional beds in intensive care. On March 23, the peak began.

Oxygen consumption has exploded

When it came to medical fluids, the main need was oxygen. "Our biggest problem is the lack of oxygen outlets. On the other hand, we have not noticed any difficulties related to the sizing of the networks."

Note that during this period, oxygen consumption exploded. In March, oxygen consumption increased by 66% at the New Civil Hospital (NHC) and by 21% at Hautepierre. In April, this consumption increased by 29% at NHC and by 43% at the Hautepierre site.

“The oxygen consumption was 7 kg of oxygen per day and per Covid patient,” calculated Cédric Boulay.

To duplicate the oxygen outlets which were lacking, "system D worked well since the splitters were designed in the technical workshops of the establishment".

Plexiglas protections for the reception areas were also requested. They were also made in the workshops of the hospital. "But we have suffered from plexiglass supply problems. Moreover, prices have multiplied at least by 2 since the start of the crisis." In total, more than 200 of these guards have been installed, all manufactured in-house.

To manage flows within buildings and limit access to sites, gardeners and technicians came to reinforce security guards. In total, 12 protocols for adapting the flow of Covid patients have been put in place.

With regard to transfers of Covid patients to other regions and abroad, "it should be noted that we have been enormously helped by our border colleagues, in particular by Switzerland (hospitals in Bern and St. Gallen) and Germany (Offenbach) ", remarked the infrastructure director of HUS.

With Covid-19, the world faces an oxygen shortage Sylvie Logean 15/07

The increased liquid oxygen needs of patients severely affected by Covid-19 put the global market for this medical gas in a difficult situation, especially since oxygen is also used by people with chronic respiratory diseases.

Six hundred and twenty thousand cubic meters per day. With more than a million new cases of Covid-19 recorded daily globally, this is the amount of medical oxygen that the world currently needs, according to the World Health Organization, to treat patients affected by a severe form of the new coronavirus, but also those with chronic cardio-respiratory pathologies requiring a daily supply of oxygen.
