Oil Uses by Business Line

by Christophe » 03/07/08, 12:19

Here are fairly precise figures on the use of a barrel of oil. In other words: how much oil in a barrel is used for what?

A barrel of oil contains 42 US gallons, ie 158,97 liters (1 gallonUS = 3,785 liters, 1 gallonUK = 4,546 liters).

The numbers are about the USA and are an average. Source: http://www.unctad.org/

Fuel (gasoline): 73,8 L (46,4%)
diesel and light fuel oil (heating oil): 34,8 L (21,9%)
kerosene (jet fuel for aviation): 15,2 L (9,6%)
heavy fuel oil (ocean freight, thermal power plants, industries): 8,7 (5,5%)
refined petroleum gas (LPG / LPG): 7,2 (4,5%)
other gases (ethane, propane, butane): 7,2 (4,5%)
coke: 6,8 (4,3%)
asphalt: 4,9 (3,1%)
bases for petrochemicals (plastics, fertilizers ... etc): 4,5 (2,8%)
lubricants: 1,9 (1,2%)
heating kerosene (or kerosene): 0,7 (0,4%)
Other (waxes, greases): 1,1 (0,7%)

These figures are averages and vary quite a bit from one oil to another, from one refinery to another and from one period to another (fluctuation of demand and market).

What do this painting remind me of? Fuel must be consumed to be able to make some of the other compounds needed by our industries Thus fuels could even be considered as by-products necessary for the manufacture of plastic.

Interesting indeed ...

In fact, do we know in "diesel and fuel oil" what part goes to domestic heating, thermal power stations and transport?

Is it counted under "fuel (gasoline)"?

Fuel = gasoline ... it's not clear?

No, I do not know the proportion.

Do not forget that this concerns USA... where there are very few diesel cars and the heating is mostly electricity (coal).
