Recycling of coal residues in Brazil

by Christophe » 10/11/06, 11:26

Chemists from the IPEN Nuclear Energy Research Institute (Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares) managed to turn coal residues from thermoelectric plants into zeolite, a mineral with a composition similar to clays. This substance, with absorption properties, is used to treat liquid industrial effluents. The zeolite thus obtained makes it possible to decontaminate wastewater from electroplating processes, eliminating 88% of the zinc present. Each kilogram of zeolite removes 36 grams of metal. The recycling of ashes released by thermoelectric plants to produce zeolite replaces a pollutant process implemented by the mining industry.
