The closure of Fessenheim, an ecological fault

by izentrop » 21/02/20, 22:15

The closure of the two nuclear reactors at the Fessenheim plant is clearly a decision taken to please environmentalists. But it is also very bad news for the environment. And especially for the climate. Emmanuel Macron, who likes to present himself on the international scene as one of the most ardent defenders of the fight against global warming, is aware that nuclear energy is a mass energy that emits (almost) no gas at greenhouse effect, and therefore does not contribute to global warming. By doing without an installation producing 1,8 GW of carbon-free electricity, France risks increasing its greenhouse gas emissions, and that is not the promise of installing 300 MW of solar in the Haut-Rhin which will change much in the equation. https://www.lefigaro.fr/sciences/la-fer ... e-20200211

False, this is very good news:
However, the closure of a single reactor at the Fessenheim power plant is the source of an impressive flood of untruths. "Ecological fault", "crime against the environment", "ecological aberration" ... this ball rises in the name of the climate. According to declared “anti-Greta Thunbergs”, the climate has finally become an emergency. Only the argument turns out to be weak. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has estimated that we would barely avoid 9% of greenhouse gas emissions by commissioning 1 nuclear reactor per week for ... 15 years. Conversely, a 100% renewable energy scenario in France by 2050 is achievable and climate-compatible according to ADEME's prospective studies.

By the way, wouldn't you be the green lobby that would have won once again?
You may think that it is in the general interest, it is your right, as it is mine to think exactly the opposite .... but the fact is that it is this movement which has won.

Remind me the other times? Do you have a list? Any info?
Maybe the ban on lead in gasoline is a victory of the green lobby? Asbestos itou? The decline in sulfur in diesel idem? As is the ban on the use of hexachlorophene in baby talc?

I almost shed a tear ... yep the bastards of ecologists are full of paradoxes!

But in fact the current concern is no longer really CO2 ... but everything that we have already started ... the closure of a power plant, of 1000 plants, will not change much anymore! We have opened the climatic pandora box!

@GuyGadebois I'm not talking to you about 50 years ago, I'm talking to you today :!:

Unfortunately you are right.
Should we add more even if it does not actually represent much. With the same reasoning, one could also say that it is not worthwhile for Western countries to take any measure whatsoever, since the rest of the world does the opposite.
That's kind of what Trump says and it's not my cup of tea.

The nuclear kwh is not sold at its fair price, it is subsidized (insurance in particular) and consequently distorts competition with renewable energy whose development it slows down.

Yes and? Closing a power plant after 42 years (which was designed to last 40 years) before it goes wild, is it a victory for the green lobby?

Yes, at one point we necessarily end up being "right"! The "green lobby", or rather anti-nuclear, it has been saying over and over for 42 years that Fessenheim should be closed because it will "blow us up" mouth".
In any case for tranche 1 stopped yesterday, it did not happen. It's just an observation. And yet it was a serious and imminent danger for 42 years according to some.

Yes, and it’s been 40 years since he crashed
