Elephant grass Miscanthus giganteus JT

by Christophe » 09/08/07, 17:14

Report today on the FR2 News.

According to this report 1 hectare of miscanthus would give the equivalent of ... 7000 L of fuel per year! : Shock: All transformable after drying in the form of pellets / pellets exactly as for sawdust! It would also be interesting to know the% energy required for their transformation (harvesting, grinding, drying, compression pellets ...) but it must be largely positive.

The ton would be sold between 200 and 250 €. That is, if the PCI pellets standards are the same as for wood (2kg wood pellets = 1L fuel) up to 30% cheaper than dom fuel equivalent energy ...

I think we can repackage oilseeds and wood (except waste) for heating!

With such a yield we can imagine, once again, very affordable communal crops ... We are close to the yield (on the surface) of oil algae without the disadvantages (mastery of the culture medium, strains ...)

ps: the PCI is very interesting, see:

The first harvest was 500 t harvested on 40 hectares (ie 12,5 t / ha) in Brittany, in spring 2006. Miscanthus was planted in 2004 by Bical UK. This production was purchased in part by a cement manufacturer, who tests the valorization of cement of his PCI (lower calorific value) which is like wheat straw, much higher than the wood chip (4500 kWh / t, against 3300 for the wafer, equal weight).

1) We therefore have: 12,5 * 4500 = 56250 kWh / ha or the "gross" equivalent of 5740 L of fuel (1L = 9,8kWh) or a ratio of 2,17 kg per L of fuel.

2) By cons I do not understand the value 3300 kWh / T for wood chips: we find the equivalent of 3 kg 1L about fuel and not 2 kg for 1. The wafer may be wetter than the Pellets / Granules?

In any case it is to the advantage of Miscanthus ...

I would still like to put a little flat with enthusiasm
for this plant. It is true what grows very fast and is very
prolific.

For the same kind of 3.80 m high) have plant in my garden as a hedge. I can say that it is very demanding in
water and fertilizer. In addition, it requires a soil rich in
organic . Apart from eliminating manure of all kinds, I do not
I am not convinced that this is the panacee.

Yes Rabbit, the facts you say are in the Ademe paper on miscanthus

A word in the report in question said that it could very well grow on "polluted" soils (heavy metals I believe), so it would act as a phyto-purification of the soils ???

Rabbit, did you find it or your plant? It is bought in some nurseries?
