The 1st commercial Pelamis launched in Portugal

Portugal launched the first commercial application of Pelamis on Tuesday. This mechanical 'sea snake' which produces electricity from waves, should soon see its population multiply off the Portuguese coast.
The first phase of the project includes 3 Pelamis which will offer a power of 2,25 MW off the coast of Aguçadoura, in the north of the country. They will be deployed nearly 5 km from the coast.

The second phase of the project provides for 25 additional machines, with a power of 18,75 MW.

The project is led by a new consortium, Ondas de Portugal, made up of Energias de Portugal (EDP, 45%), Enersis (Australian investment group Babcock & Brown, 35%) and the Portuguese group Efacec (20%) . The investment of 9 million euros represented by this first phase is shared at 23% by the developer of this Scottish technology, Pelamis Wave Power Ltd.

According to a press release from the producer EDP, "this Ondas de Portugal consortium project, (...) is an additional step in EDP's strategy to maintain and consolidate a global leadership in the renewable energy production sector" .
