Future of electrical storage: flywheel?

by minguinhirigue » 04/08/08, 15:38

The electricity fairy still escapes much in terms of its ability to be stored.

We have batteries, capacitors, supercapacitors, hydroelectric dams and pressure storage tanks, there is also the attractive vector that is hydrogen.

In more or less futuristic applications, there are storages in superconducting toroids, and, renovation of an old technology, vacuum flywheels on magnetic bearings.

I would like to know what the few fanatics of econology think about this storage.

The advantages are the very long time before maintenance (more than 52000 hours), the charging and discharging speed, large mass capacities (up to 100 to 200 wh and 500 w per kg) ...

The disadvantages are the purchase price, the technicality in the event of a breakdown, the potential danger in the event of breakage of the steering wheel (more important than the leakage of an electrolyte a priori!?)

Unfortunately, I only have echoes and small diagrams which indicate that the purchase prices are roughly twice those of a battery of equivalent capacity. I would like to know if there is more specific information on this subject?

I did not try to contact them, but after research, I noticed that they are dragging to finalize their project :?
Otherwise, I like their project because the engine life is significantly extended (they speak of 20 years) provided that the owners leave their house eight hours a day :D

I dig up an old subject, a small application of flywheels in racing, with two flywheels delivering a peak of 164 hp for a GT3 porch: http://www.gizmag.com/williams-hybrid-p ... ent/14918/
