Solar in Israel: the light of the Nations?

by Christophe » 09/08/06, 11:17

In the sun can be a light ... in the respect of human rights it is another matter ...

There was a time, Israel could proudly present itself as "the light of the Nations" in green technologies. Since the 50s, the solar water heaters drawing the urban skyline of Israel could not escape visitors. The regulations already required the use of these devices on most residential buildings, relieving the country's dependence on fossil fuels.

Israeli solar innovation did not stop there, and many research projects have flourished at the Weizmann Institute or at the University of the Negev, in particular.

However, while most industrialized nations arm themselves with laws in order to make the best use of renewable resources, Israel lets its industrialists and entrepreneurs do so without legislating much. Most European countries have adopted measures to meet at least 15% of their energy needs through non-polluting technologies.

Germany, a leading figure in ecology, has even passed a law to install 100,000 photovoltaic panels on the roofs. In Israel, informative and tax-efficient legal texts would make it possible to promote in-house technologies, in particular giants like Solel or promising start-ups like Genova.
